President Trump and members of his Cabinet met at the White House on Thursday afternoon as Washington and global partners reel under the pressure of a mounting trade war.

The gathering of officials came a day after Trump issued a 90-day pause on reciprocal tariffs for nearly all foreign trading partners, opening up the door for negotiations. The 3-month reprieve, which notably excludes China, does not apply to the 10 percent baseline import tax the president imposed last week during his “Liberation Day” event.

Despite an unstable stock market and worries of how the tariffs could affect U.S. consumers, Trump and administration officials have stuck behind their argument that tariffs will boost jobs and manufacturing in the U.S. and stabilize the global trade playing field.

The meeting also comes as the administration continues its work to overhaul the federal workforce and cut government spending.
